La Ferme Paulianne
Paulianne is an 89 hectare organic farm bordering the River Drôme in the Pre-Alps of south east France. We have converted the old farmhouse (part 12th century, part 18th century) into five apartments for rent or purchase by the week. The farm covers two small valleys and three hills with the wild mountain Drôme river running 2km along one border. The Drôme valley is surrounded by limestone mountains, with the Glandasse rising to 2000m immediately north of the farm. The valley is connected by direct overnight train with Paris, with four trains running daily through the farm, making connections to the UK, Brussels, Amsterdam easy.
The valley is one of the sunniest places in Europe, with an average 255 days of sunshine per year. The tops of the mountains around Paulianne are snow-clad from November to May. The Drôme valley has facilities for a wide range of out-door activities. There are two local ski stations. Paragliding, potholing, canoeing, rock climbing and mountain walking are available locally. In addition to our lake and a nearby Lac Bleu with pedalos etc, there is some bracing swimming in local mountain rivers and conventional pools nearby. The Vercors Nature Reserve is on our doorstep. Medieval Chatillon and Die are nearby and both 'well worth a visit'. And the Claps, where the mountain fell into the Drôme in 1442, offers an interesting sight with swimming and rock climbing on hand.
The farm is home to wild boar, roe deer, beavers, foxes, badgers, polecats, martens, hares, red squirrels and lots of bats. The birdlife is spectacular. We also have salamanders and a wide variety of frogs, toads, lizards and snakes. Primroses and purple kidney-leafed anemones grow in masses in the spring, followed rapidly by the first orchids. The 22 varieties so far identified on the farm bloom in succession until late June. The mountains around are home to the full range of Alpine flowers. There is a long local tradition of picking wild medicinal herbs such as mare's tail, coltsfoot, St Johns wort and arnica. We grow wheat, barley, maize, oats, rye, spelt, sunflowers, soya beans, lentils, coriander, fenugreek, chickpeas and haricot beans on about 20 hectares. There are hundreds of fruit trees. We also have walnuts and lime trees (tilleul) and lots of soft fruit. There is a large market garden with 500 square metres of polytunnels where we produce tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, basil, onions, leeks, garlic and potatoes, mostly for processing into bottled products. Our farm animals consist of a small intrepid flock of chickens and seven donkeys who might one day earn their keep doing farm work and trekking in the mountains. Staying at PaulianneAll five apartments are centrally heated, fully furnished and equipped, including bed linen. The rent/service charges include, heating, electricity and gas. If you want, you can live substantially off our home-grown, home-produced farm products. We sell our own fresh and processed fruit, roots and vegetables, bread, eggs and a range of jams and sauces. We provide organic vegetarian meals for holiday makers, when we can. TariffsTariffs range from £75 - £300 per week depending on the season, and the size of the flat. The smallest flat sleeps 4/5 is priced from £75 - £180 per week. The largest flat which sleeps up to 11 is from £100 - £300 per week. We also have a number of cabins, caravans and a yurt available for rent for less than a week. La Ferme Paulianne
