The Auberge sur la Montagne
The Auberge sur la Montagne is a British-run, traditional, rustic Savoyard chalet-hotel in the heart of the French Alps. Close to Val d'Isère, it is equally well-placed for winter skiing or snow-boarding holidays, and summer hiking or biking holidays. We are in one of the most easterly and spectacularly beautiful parts of France, in the Alps right up against the Italian border. We are nestled on the side of the mountain at 1300 metres altitude, between Bourg St Maurice and Val d’Isère
Breakfast is a buffet style feast, offering orange juice, a selection of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, freshly baked hot croissants and bread with local butter and jams, freshly brewed tea, herbal teas or coffee. We offer a 3 course dinner each evening. We cook all the food ourselves using fresh, local produce and take a pride in serving a variety of local dishes, as well as international cuisine. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for by Andy, himself a vegetarian, who is a qualified Cordon Vert chef. In winter, our house wine is included, but our wine cellar is well-stocked with wines which we purchase ourselves direct from the growers, from which guests can choose to sample the local Vins de Savoie or select wines from all over France, winter or summer. Packed lunches are available upon request. Sample MenuAuberge stacks: stacks of sliced aubergine, tomato and mozzarella baked and doused in pesto sauce Tofu plait: layers of tofu, cheese, onion and fresh herbs wrapped in a flaky pastry plait Baked sweet potatoes Braised fennel Ratatouille Soupe de fruits rouges: a selection of red berries picked fresh from our garden (strawberries, raspberries, red currants, blueberries and/or blackberries according to season) marinated in crème de fruit, white wine and sugar served with a generous dollop of crème fraîche
Our spacious dining room with its 200 year old wooden beams has a fully stocked bar and a roaring log fire. It offers stunning views across to the Aiguille Rouge above Les Arcs. We have a separate sitting room with satellite TV and a well-stocked library of videos and books. There are eight guest bedrooms with sleeping accommodation for up to twenty-four people. Our suntrap south facing sun terrace and garden are glorious on sunny days, and we even have an outdoor hot-tub and sauna to relax in at the end of a long, hard day. In winter our position in the middle of everywhere gives you the most fantastic choice of downhill winter sports! Some of our guests choose to ski a different resort each day; others choose to ski the world famous Val d'Isère - Tignes circuit without paying world famous resort prices or enduring world famous resort commercialisation! Personally we spend all our time getting to grips with the off-piste paradise of Ste. Foy: it's uncrowded, the powder can last untracked for days and you can ski through the trees back to our door. It’s a perfect place for children and beginners as well as for a relaxing ski holiday away from the crowds. The French Alps are glorious in summer, and the Auberge is ideally placed to explore some of the most stunning mountain scenery, and participate in a wide range of activities, including walking, cycling, mountain biking, water sports, golf, horse-riding, tennis, fishing, and even skiing.
